Apple Lion Learn Word and Unlearn Misspelled Spelling Mistake

Technology > Apple

Summary. Apple has a customizable system-wide personal local dictionary of correctly spelled words that are unique to you.

The spelling correction is available to all programs that make use of it.

This is handy since in the past, spell check was only available in applications like Microsoft Word.

When a misspelled word is underlined in red, simply right click and choose Learn Spelling to add it to the dictionary. To remove a word, right click the word and choose unlearn.

Instructions. In OS X 10.7 it’s a little more involved to remove a word. These instructions will show you how to remove a word from the local dictionary.

  1. While in the Finder, press the option (alt) key and while holding that key, from the Go menu, choose Library.
  2. Look for the Spelling folder. Inside of that will be a LocalDictionary file. With Text Edit is running, click and drag the LocalDictionary file to the Text Edit icon in the dock. This will open the file for editing.
  3. Remove the word(s) you don’t want in the local dictionary file. Then save and exit.
