The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil (Video View Online)

Activism | Environment

Summary. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba’s economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80 percent – people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships and struggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people during this difficult time.

Cubans share how they transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and local, urban gardens. It is an unusual look into the Cuban culture during this economic crisis, which they call “The Special Period.”

The film opens with a short history of Peak Oil, a term for the time in our history when world oil production will reach its all-time peak and begin to decline forever. Cuba, the only country that has faced such a crisis – the massive reduction of fossil fuels – is an example of options and hope.

Google AdSense Potential Source of Malware

SecurityTechnology

Summary. Do a Google search for “Google AdSense Malware” (without quotes) and you’ll get over a million results.

In fact, before you can even finish typing the search request, Google will suggest the search for you (since it’s become so popular).

This is shown below (click here or image below for larger view).

* * *

Common Occurrence. One website administrator tells a common story that represents what’s happening to many others:

“I recently was getting a daily notice where users were randomly getting malware warnings popping up on their browser when on my site. I shut off all Google Adsense and this immediately stopped. I’ve summized that a javascript with Malware was being delivered through my google AdSense.” [source 1]

Problem Cause. Motivated to deliver more advertising (and increase profits), Google has (relatively recently) added over 550 third party advertising companies and allows them to advertise through their AdSense system. Each of these companies have many advertisers of their own. So, Google AdSense has become a funnel for a flood of ads which become difficult to check (or perhaps costly – which cuts into profits). This is an “opt-out” setting, so if you’re a Google AdSense user, you may be exposing your website visitors to malware.

How it Happens. Hackers write malicious program code into the ads. Maybe they submit legitimate code initially then change it for malicious code. Either way, those ads eventually get served up on your site. Either the ad javascript itself, or the places it takes your site visitors, or fake messages making your site visitor think their computer is infected. These ads violate the Federal Trade Commission laws on false advertising, but since everyone’s making money of it, nobody complains.

New York Times Malware. In 2009, the New York Times mistakenly served up malware infected ads.

“In September 2009, the New York Times unwittingly presented millions of their website visitors and readers with malicious advertising. Thousands of computers were infected with viruses as a result. Even in my relatively small circle of acquaintances I knew of many people effected, so the impact must have been huge. The same thing that happened to the New York Times is happening on a wider scale with Google AdSesne, but it’s going unchecked, and unstopped. There’s too much money at stake. I’ve spoken out, but nobody is listening.” – Greg Johnson
[source 1source 2]

Why It’s Difficult to Track. Because ads are served up randomly for each site visitor, an individual malicious ad may never be detected by website security scanning services such as McAfee Site AdvisorNorton Safe Web, and Sucuri.net. Only when your site traffic reaches a certain threshold will you attain critical mass of, let’s say 1,000 people of whom, 900 don’t get the malware ad, 90 get warned that your site has malware and never visit it again, 10 who get infected, but never figure out where or how. Out of the 100 who get served the malicious ad and either get infected or warned not to visit your site, there might be one who goes out of their way to make contact with you (probably through some other channel than  your site such as Facebook) and says, “Hey, I just wanted to let you know, my antivirus software told me your site is infected.” This begins a time consuming and perplexing polite exchange of emails in which  you are never able to reproduce the problem.

Decline in Site Traffic. A good sign that this is happening to your site will be if you notice a significant drop in your site traffic for no reason. As explained above, you probably won’t ever get warned that it’s happening.

Problem Solution. It’s probably the case that Google AdSense direct advertising partners are trustworthy, but many of the third party advertising agencies don’t have quality checks in place. One way to fix this problem is to manually place ads in your site (but that’s a lot of work to keep updated). Another fix for this is to login to Google Adsense and then go to the allow & block ads page for third party advertisers. First turn off the default setting to “Automatically allow new Google certified ad networks.” Then, click the “block all” button to block all 550+ advertisers, and then go through to select a few that seem trustworthy.

Warning. Most websites larger than ours probably wouldn’t take the time to investigate or do anything about it. Disabling potentially harmful advertising reduces profits, but we believe it’s the right thing to do. Unfortunately, many other sites out there won’t do the same as we have done. So, be sure you annually upgrade to the newest version of your antivirus software and make sure its updated regularly.

__________

Thanks. Out of about two million visitors to our site, we know of only two people who were warned by their antivirus software about malicious content on our site. Because two out of two million seemed too high, we began investigating this, and discover what is reported above. We’re deeply grateful to these two people (Pat T. and Wally G. )who took the time to correspond with us as we investigated this further.

Author’s Guide to Website Creation for Book Promotion

Effective Living

Summary. Below is an article from Dan Moench, Marketing Director at Gibbs Smith Publisher.

The article offers some excellent suggestions for authors to consider when planning to create a website.

These guidelines probably apply to other industries as well.

Specifically, the article addresses how focused or broad you should be with your website title and online identity (brand).

The advice is consistent with what I’ve recommended for people, so I thought I’d simply post the article here.

~ Greg Johnson

2 February 2012

Dear Authors,

I hope the first month of the new year has treated you all well, and that you are still working hard on your resolutions. No one has given up yet, right? Over the past few weeks I have been thinking about what I wanted to say during this month, and a few experiences and interactions have helped me decide that I would talk about this new word which I’ve been using, which I’m pretty sure is not even a word at all. That is, “cross-discoverability”.

Not all of you are authors for the same reason. For some it is your livelihood, for others it is primarily a way to market yourself or your business, and for some it may simply be a hobby that also happens to earn an income. But whatever the reason, I will go out on a limb and assume that all of you are interested in selling books, and more of them. So I want to help you to be able to do just that. As an author there are many things you can do to help your books sell, but truly effective authors do the right things, not everything.

The idea behind cross-discoverability is that everything you do should work together towards the greater good of getting your book sold. Like logs in a fire – which create more heat together than apart – you want overlap in your marketing so that you really get something heating up. Instead of trying to outline every possible use of this concept, I’ll just use an example which illustrates the point, and hopefully you can take the idea and work it into whatever you are doing.

Many times when authors come out with a new book, whether it’s their first, second, or tenth, they get the urge to create a website (or at least Facebook page) just for that particular book, let’s call it My Great Book by Jane Doe. So they go online, registerwww.mygreatbook.com and immediately start pushing their audience to that website. Let’s say they are successful, and get a regular audience of 5,000 people to that site a month. That’s great. Now, what happens two years later, when Jane Doe writes her latest book, Another Awesome Book? Should she go start another website,www.anotherawesomebook.com, and manage both of them? Does she begin corralling people from scratch to now head to the new website? Does she tell everyone from www.mygreatbook.com to head over to the new website? What if she wants to send a message to all of her followers – does she make two posts, one on each site? You are starting to see the issues here – Jane may have two logs burning, but does she really have a fire?

For the same reason that General Motors isn’t called “Truck Co”, and McDonald’s isn’t called “Hamburgers Inc”, you don’t want to limit your branding to a specific title. Yes, General Motors sells trucks, and yes, McDonald’s sells hamburgers, but that isn’t all they do. As an author, you don’t only write one book and you probably don’t only write books. The principle of cross-discoverability would suggest that had Jane created a website revolving around herself, www.writingsofjane.com, when her second book came out she would have already had an attentive audience in once place to which she could announce the news. Her third, fourth, and tenth book, all get the same treatment, and they therefore benefit from each other. If I am a huge Jane Doe fan, I can follow one site and get everything I need. Facebook is popular for just this same reason; I can follow multiple companies/people/etc in one news feed, rather than checking 15 different websites each day.

The biggest successes we’ve seen, especially recently, come from authors who (1) have their own audience, and (2) can market to that entire audience in an organized way. As an author, you should realize that you are the brand people care about, and your books (and whatever else you may do) are your products. Market your brand first and foremost, and use your brand to market your products.

As always, I appreciate your feedback. I hope these letters are helpful to you. I’d sure like to know if they aren’t! We are working hard to continue to build momentum with our brand and our own products, and I’m delighted to get to share what we learn with each of you, our authors. Please write/call/mail any of your thoughts directly to me. May 2012 be a great year for all of us!

p.s. Oh and one last thing… if/when you do plan on building a website, make sure you get the name registered before you start telling people about it. I just read through a book proposal where the author stated that he would be building a website, and I verified that he had not purchased the domain name yet. This opens up the field for “squatters” – who purchase domain names only to hold them at ransom. So act before you speak!

Sincerely,

Dan Moench

Gregory Johnson – Personal Update 201204

Gregory Paul Johnson – Personal Update 201204 | 30 April 2012 | Monday

Summary. This is the monthly personal update for Gregory Johnson. Life categories listed alphabetically rather than in order of increasing interdependence described on the map page.

* * *

Dear Friend,

Here’s my personal update for April 2012. This month’s life categories remain mostly unchanged except for Health. For more about what’s on my mind, you can read recent ResourcesForLife.com newsletters and if we’re not already connected on Facebook, I invite you to visit my page and send me a friend request.

  • Activism. With regard to activism, I continue to believe the answer is to live the answer. As such, I believe that lifestyle activism and becoming the media are the most powerful methods for impacting the world. For this reason, sharing my photography, producing videos, and writing content for the ResourcesForLife.com website continue to be my primary means of activism and outreach. The site has had over a million visitors in the past few years, and it’s an effective way to have a broad positive impact. I also attempt to live a transparent, open, and accessible life so I can share my discoveries and successes as well as what I’ve learned through life’s setbacks.
  • Career. I’m thankful that my work at the University of Iowa is going well. My technology consulting business continues to be busy. My current clients continue to be wonderful to work with, and I’m also gaining some new ones. I’m very grateful. In recent months I’ve been doing more with web design.
  • Effective Living. I’m trying to stick with the Schedule for Life and the Holistic Living System which help provide maximum effectiveness and efficiency. I’ve not updated these systems for over a year, so an update is needed.
  • Finance. I continue to look for ways to decrease my regular expenses and increase my income. I’m also automating and streamlining my financial management which allows me to gain valuable insights into spending and earning trends.
  • Health. This month I’ve begun completely overhauling my wellness system and weight management system. I’ll be writing about this more in the coming months. For an early look, visit the new page on Wellness Centers.
  • Lifeways. My faith and religious practice is currently Adonaikido. Since the teachings, beliefs, and principles of Adonaikido are based upon various world religions, I’m expanding upon some of the Lifeways resource pages. As a result of my diversity of faith, many people still consider my beliefs and practices consistent with Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Jainism, and Buddhism.
  • Relationships. Makur and I are doing well. I’m grateful for the relationships I have with family, friends, colleagues, and clients.

Many thanks to all of you who are continuing to keep me in your thoughts, prayers, and meditation time. ~ Gregory

About the Personal Update

For about eleven years, the first and most important communication I would send out each month would be a personal update covering seven areas of life described on the Map Page of the ResourcesForLive.com website. I reference this monthly practice in my Schedule for Life. Over the years, my personal updates went out each month to about 10 family members and friends who I consider to be my “advisory board” – a group of people with several hundred years of collective wisdom. As well as looking for feedback and guidance, I also saw these updates as a way of making a regular personal life assessment. As of September 2007, I began publishing these monthly updates here in my online Journal. The seven areas of my personal life have solidified in recent years, so there’s not much “news” to report, but as there is, I’ll report it here in these updates.

Service Fees Update: Volume Discount, Mileage and Travel Time Charge

Technology

Summary. In January 2012, I announced our new slightly increased rates for 2012. After many years without any rate increases, my new rates of $70 per hour for home users and $90 per hour for businesses are still about half the hourly rate of my competitors, and about the same as what I charged back in 1997.

Volume Discount. Even though our rates are already low, this month we’re announcing a volume discount plan for those who are regularly using our services. For every 10 hours of support, the 10th hour is free (within a 30-day period). So, that’s a $70 to $90 value for our regular customers. This also applies when when 10 hours are paid in advance.

Mileage and Travel Time Charge. Much of the support and training I provide is done using remote support software, and through phone or email communications. Increasingly I’ve found that many of the on-site support calls I make are for minor repairs that take only a few minutes, yet the cost and time of travel still need to be recuperated. Some service providers charge a minimum fee for trips. Because I have some clients within walking distance (a few minutes), and others a 30 minute drive away, I feel it’s better to charge for round-trip travel time and vehicle mileage (if applicable) instead. This way costs are paid as accrued.

Media Request: CBC News, Canadian Broadcasting, Seeks Small Housers

OrganizationCBC News, Canadian Broadcasting

Type of media: Television, radio & web content

Address: Toronto, Canada

Contact: Lysanne Louter

Phone number: 416-205-2799

Email: lysanne.louter@cbc.ca

Request:

I’m a producer with CBC’s The National working on a series of stories about alternative housing for seniors (outside of traditional nursing homes and long-term care facilities).

I’m curious if you know of any interesting/alternatives places where seniors are living? I’m looking for really unique examples… such as small houses in the backyard or laneway of their kids’ house or in a small house seniors community. I am looking for people in Canada, but I would be interested in American examples too if they’re really unique and not too far from Toronto. Are there any architects/designers/activists who I should talk to as well?

I am putting together a pitch for later this week and would like to begin filming the second week of May 2012.

Practices, Habits, and Attitudes that Ensure Optimal Results from Wellness Centers

Health > Wellness Centers

Summary. Wellness Centers provide teaching and training for those who want to enhance their overall health. To do this, changes in lifestyle and diet are typically required. Usually nutritional supplements and special foods are sometimes prescribed.

Optimal Results. The following will help ensure optimal effectiveness and improvement from your wellness center visit.

  • Change. If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you always got. Seeing big changes in health through natural methods typically requires big changes in lifestyle and diet. So, one needs to embrace positive lifestyle changes.
  • Documentation. It’s essential to document your progress and practice. Documenting progress is a great motivator because you see that your efforts are paying off. Documenting what you’re doing is important because it makes you more mindful of the process. If your new diet includes nutritional supplements that need to be taken at different times of the day, then it’s important to track and make sure you’re getting everything you need when you need it. If you’re wanting advice on your daily practice to get better outcomes, having everything written down gives a wellness advisor something to go from. There’s often a difference between what we plan to do and what we actually get done. So, documenting keeps us honest with ourselves.
  • Perseverance. Significant changes in health can take many months or years. So, having perseverance is key. This is another reason why documenting your progress (as mentioned above) can show you the visual trajectory of where you’ll be in the future if you stick with it.
  • Planning. Each person needs to take the advice and guidelines given to them, and figure out a way to map that into a maintainable daily and weekly routine. Having a plan is essential. It’s not enough to simply tell yourself, “Yes, I’ll exercise more and eat more vegetables.” You need a plan that describes when, where, and what. It’s really important to document what you are actually doing to see how close your daily practice is to meeting your intended plan of action.
  • Sacrifice. It’s initially hard to stop eating certain foods, or make changes in your life to reduce stress and exercise more. Those willing to completely embrace an entire wellness program, and push through the initial discomfort, will get the greatest rewards. Initially it feels like sacrifice, but optimal health and wellness feels better than anything tastes.
