Evernote for MacOS Recent Update Version Changelog

This document provides notes for recent updates to the MacOS version of Evernote. You can learn about new features and what has been fixed or improved.

Version 7.14

Fixed:

  • Sometimes the app would get stuck loading a note (usually a web clip or shared note) until finally it gave up and assumed you were offline. But now your notes should load fast enough to make you smile.
  • If you updated to macOS Catalina then tried to highlight text inside a PDF, it would look like there was nothing selected. You could say it was a big fail, but on the bright side, we fixed it.

Version 7.13

Fixed:

  • Security update.
  • Note title and note content no longer overlap for very long user names.
  • Extra whitespace is now trimmed in space names and space descriptions.

Version 7.12

Fixed:

  • Security update.
  • Fixed a crash that could occur while importing from ENEX files.

Version 7.11

Fixed:

  • Fixed a migration error that some users encountered after upgrading to 7.10.
  • Fixed an issue where Evernote helper displayed null as keyboard shortcut.
  • Fixed an issue where audio note recorded in Mac client and shared via email did not play in Mac Mail application.
  • Fixed an issue where Spotlight indexing would periodically ask for a password.

Version 7.10

New:

  • Your notes will now load even faster. Like, “Wow, that’s fast” fast.

Fixed:

  • If you’d had the nagging feeling that something was missing, you were right: Your notes had stopped appearing in Spotlight Search. But we fixed it, so any existential angst should be easing soon.

Version 7.9

Fixed:

  • If you copied something from Evernote to another editor, all the line and paragraph breaks you placed so lovingly would just disappear. Since our parents taught us to play well with others, we fixed that.
  • Printing a note with tables is fun, right? (OK, maybe that’s just us–we’re kind of geeky). It’s not fun when the table borders don’t print. We thought so too, so we fixed it.

Version 7.8

Improved:

  • You told us you love Templates, so we’ve made it even easier for you to use them. Now you can view our gallery of templates—plus any you’ve saved—right inside the app. Just click on the “Template” button when you create a new note to see them all. Oh yeah, you know we’re doin’ our happy dance.
  • FYI, they look great with Dark Mode too.

Version 7.7

Improved:

  • You said you love Dark Mode, so we’re polishing it up to make it even better.
  • We made a few tweaks under the hood so you can now type faster than ever.
  • We’ve made it easier to see if something isn’t right when creating notebooks. We don’t like error messages any more than you, but wouldn’t you rather know?
  • So, you like centering text? We brought back the keyboard shortcut to make it easier for you.
  • Now when you export notes as a backup, it won’t include the ones in the trash. Because you probably trashed them for a reason, right?

Fixed:

  • We took care of a few annoying issues with Dark Mode.
  • Sometimes the app wouldn’t let you add a table to your note. But we unplugged it and plugged it back in and now everything’s working again.
  • When you merged notes, their images sometimes wouldn’t come along for the ride, which was a little embarrassing.
  • When you created a new account, the links to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy weren’t working. And you should always read the terms, right? Right!?

Version 7.6

What’s New:

  • We’ve upped our support for macOS Mojave to include (drumroll, please)… Dark Mode! Yes, it’s finally here. Welcome to the dark side.

Fixes:

  • We made a whole bunch of accessibility improvements to the app, because nothing should stand between you and a great idea.
  • We tweaked the login screen to match our new look and feel. It’s the little things.
  • We fixed a few specific issues that were getting in your way, mostly related to annotating images and playing nicely with Mojave.

Version 7.5.2

New:

  • Are blank notes getting you down? Say hello to templates. Now, when you create a note, you can format it with one of 30+ templates. Stay tuned for more.

Version 7.5

Improvements:

  • We’ve cleaned up the More Options menu (“…”) so it’s easier to find the actions you use most.
  • To make upgrading effortless, we added a button to the toolbar. We promise it won’t bite, but don’t worry, you can always remove it if you’d prefer.
  • Since we recently changed our appearance (does this color make our sidebar look big?), we tweaked our background colors to match.

Fixes:

  • We fixed a problem where you wouldn’t see a note snippet if the note hadn’t synced properly.
  • If you had more than one line of text highlighted when you tried to remove a link, all the links in the note would disappear. We’ll admit, that was taking things too far.
  • Now and then, loading web views would cause a crash, but we fixed that.
  • Occasionally, dragging a note from a space to the trash folder would cause the app to crash, but that’s no more.
  • Sometimes, annotating a PDF would cause a crash, which was a big fail.
  • The app would sometimes crash when checking for updates. Since updates are healthy, we put a stop to that.
  • Pasting into a numbered or bulleted list would remove the list text between any images. This was less than ideal, but on the bright side, we fixed it.
  • The app was forgetting your Shared with Me column widths after you closed it, which is probably not what you expected.
  • Shared notebooks weren’t showing up in your Shared with Me list. And notebooks deserve love too.
  • Triple-clicking one line of copy pasted in front of text on another line would break the list. But that’s a thing of the past.
  • If you added Japanese characters to a bulleted list, the formatting would look weird, which was unfortunate.
  • If you had 2-byte characters in a table (for example, Chinese or Japanese characters), adding a bullet point would break the table. And only WWF wrestlers should be allowed to break tables.
  • Underlining couldn’t be removed from text in a table, which wasn’t helpful.
  • Turning bold text off then pasting something into a list would turn bold back on. We really like bold, but that’s taking things too far.
  • If you pasted bulleted lists separated by paragraphs from Word into Evernote, the gaps would disappear. You could say it was a big mess.
  • Pasting data from Excel into Evernote needed a table upgrade, but there was no way for you to do it. That was an embarrassing oversight on our part.
  • Pasting text into Evernote from a coding text editor messed up the formatting, but it should be smooth sailing now.
  • Occasionally, changes you made to a note, including moving it to a different notebook, wouldn’t sync. Things should be back to normal now though.

Version 7.4

Notice anything different about us? We’ve updated our look to reflect our renewed purpose: helping you focus on what matters most. You’ll see a new design style and color palette — we even gave our elephant a makeover!

Version 7.3.1

Fixed:

  • There was an issue opening some shared business notes. Killing bugs is my business… and business is good!

Version 7.3

New:

  • Now there’s one easy place to find everything that’s been shared with you, including notes and notebooks. It’s a new feature called “Shared with Me,” and it’s in the sidebar below “Notebooks.” We think you’ll love it.

Improved:

  • We’ve made some improvements to search and you can now sort by relevance, so you can see the things that are… well, more relevant to what you’re looking for.
  • We tweaked the way notebooks are highlighted in the sidebar when you open them, to make it easier for you to navigate.
  • You can now use a forward slash when renaming your attachments. It’s the little things, right?

Fixed:

  • The “Go To Mac Forum…” link in the Preferences menu didn’t actually take you where you wanted to go. But we stopped and asked for directions so now you’re on the right path.
  • If you dragged an image to your desktop, it would show up as a text file instead. Your pics deserve better, so we cleared that up.
  • Tags used to be case insensitive, so you couldn’t create a lowercase tag if the same tag existed as uppercase. But we sent them to sensitivity training and now you can have it both ways.
  • We’re doing a better job of remembering your settings when you close the app. In particular, the note list column and expanded card view will now stay just the way you like them.
  • Now and then, you wouldn’t be able to expand or collapse items in the sidebar, which was kind of embarrassing.
  • Somehow, tags weren’t appearing in your side list view. But we sorted it out.
  • Previously you couldn’t drag notes or notebooks to the very bottom of your shortcuts list. Now you can put them wherever you like.
  • Annotating an image would scale it back to its original size. You probably zoomed in for a reason, though, so we changed that.
  • Sometimes the app would crash right after you installed it. Since you only get one chance to make a great first impression, we fixed that.
  • Dragging and dropping a notebook could sometimes cause a crash. “Drag and crash” isn’t as much fun, but it’s all good now.
  • We’ve also fixed a few specific issues that might have caused the app to crash, like interacting with the Formatting preferences pane and the Font selection panel, or using a saved search. But that’s all in the past.

Version 7.2.1

Fixed:

  • Minor performance improvements

Version 7.2

New:

  • You now can automatically download and install all updates. That’s one less thing to take care of.
  • While editing an attachment in an outside program, you might have lost all your work if the note got deleted in a crash. Now, you will get a prompt to save these changes to a new note, rescuing your hard work.

Fixed:

  • Sometimes it would all come crashing down when PDFs were annotated, but no more.
  • Now and then, nested tags would collapse when they weren’t supposed to, which was slightly embarrassing.
  • When you merged notes and synced, the notes’ images, PDFs, or audio didn’t always come along for the ride.
  • If you removed a notebook from your shortcuts, sometimes the notebook would no longer be displayed anywhere, as if it mysteriously disappeared altogether.
  • Drag and drop was sometimes interfering with copy and paste, causing copied content to not paste correctly. Can’t we all just get along?
  • When you shared a note through iMessage, sometimes it only shared the title instead of the entire note, which wasn’t particularly useful.
  • Sometimes you put a URL in a note and then the content wouldn’t load, which was a bummer.
  • When you added an image, rotated it, and then had a change of heart and hit undo, you somehow lost everything in your note. This was, admittedly, a bit of an overreaction.
  • If you didn’t have the ‘Show Notes in Groups’ sort option checked off, then you were unable to see the title of the note at the top of the list in Snippet View. A very specific wrong that has now been righted.

Evernote Business updates:

  • You’ll also see more relevant search results, thanks to some work we did under the hood.
  • The member list for a space sometimes showed blank users, which was a little spooky, but it’s all resolved now.
  • The widgets in a space were displaying an ‘unable to load’ message, which you very reasonably did not want to see. But it’s now a thing of the past.

Version 7.1.1

Fixed:

  • We took care of an issue with lists sometime having text flow vertically instead of horizontally

Version 7.1

  • A way to hide and display recent notes from the shortcuts section of the sidebar

  • A fix for an issue where sync intermittently fails for some users after clipping content from the web (CDATA error seen in log)
  • An improvement to make it easier to detect and troubleshoot specific notes that are failing to sync – if you see an exclamation mark on a note in the note list (for snippet and card view) and a red dot in the sync status column for the list views, it’s a problematic note

Version 6.13

6.13 and app updates going forwards will be supported on OS X El Capitan (10.11) and above.

Improved:

  • Sharing: consolidated share options under the “Share” button in Evernote. Share a note, choose to create a public link or modify share permissions all from one place.
  • Navigation and Commanding UI: we’ve made some adjustments to provide more space for your content using a narrower toolbar, and making some tweaks to the sidebar to improve legibility. We’ve also improved the Move Note dialog to make it even faster to move a note across accounts by listing all notebooks from both your business and personal accounts directly in the dialog.

Major improvements to tables!

  • Select the contents of a cell by clicking and dragging.
  • Choose the entire column or row just by clicking the header.
  • Drag and drop entire rows & columns.
  • Copy and paste multiple cells: Select the cells you want to move, copy them, move cursor to a new spot and paste all the cells with one click.
  • Adjust the width of one column without affecting the width of the column next to it.
  • Scroll horizontally to view a table with many columns without expanding your window.
  • Hover within a cell to activate advanced table options.
    • You can distribute columns evenly
    • Match the table width to the width of your window
    • Change the alignment of items within cells
    • Add and change background colors

Multi-tasking improvements

  • Keep your Evernote content organized using tabs. Create a new tab by selecting the ‘New Tab’ option under the File menu.
  • Pick up from where you left off – if you exit the app and re-open it, you’ll return to your previously opened windows / state.

Separation of Business and Personal

  • No longer intermingle your business and personal content in your Evernote experience but still multi-task when you need to. Improving on 6.11 Beta 1 & 2, we’ve added support for having business and personal notes open side-by-side.

Bug fixes

We’ve fixed several bugs that users reported including:

  • Shift + arrow up or down did not highlight if the line above or below was blank
  • Shift + enter did not create a non-bulleted line in a bulleted list
  • Couldn’t delete the leftmost column in a table if the top cell is formatted
  • Line breaks were unexpectedly removed after syncing some notes originally created on iPhone
  • Content copied from a PDF sometimes could not be pasted into a note
  • Applying Simplify Formatting to clipped notes removed returns
  • If the last item in a list was blank, it disappeared when users navigated away and then back to the note

  • Fixed an issue that was preventing some users from upgrading to Plus or Premium accounts through the Mac App Store.
  • Fixed several issues that were causing crashes.

Version 6.6

New:

  • Effortlessly switch between notes. Introducing a new navigation/search feature that lets you switch between notes and notebooks with the tap of a quick key. Just hit “⌘J” to give it a try. (The previous notebook selector is still available with a new shortcut: “⌘⌥J”.)
  • Zoom is here! Now you can use “⌘+” and “⌘-” or pinch gestures on the trackpad to zoom in and out of a note. Two of our developers responded to the call of this long-standing user request and knocked it out in our first ever Hack Week. Enjoy!
  • You can now easily duplicate a note from the “Note” menu.
  • Manage tags from the note view. Right-click a tag in the note editor to bring up a menu that lets you filter your notes by the tag, remove the tag from the note, or delete the tag from all notes.
  • We redesigned the audio recorder for easy, intuitive recording and playback (OS X 10.10+).

  • Improved initial Mac setup performance for accounts with 1000+ tags.
  • Fixed 7 of the top 10 crashing bugs.

Beta Features

We have a couple of features that are not quite finished yet but are available for beta testing purposes.

  • Zoom – Use “⌘+” and “⌘-” to temporarily zoom in and out. There are a few bugs, including an issue with resizing images when in zoom mode. To try it out, go to Preferences -> Software Update -> Enable zoom.
  • Code Block – This feature basically takes any selected text and converts it to a monospaced font and creates a gray background around the line of text. This also has a few bugs. It’s not recommended to turn this feature on if you’re an Android user because editing the note on Android will undo the code block. This works fine if you’re using the Common Editor beta version of Android, but will break using the standard Android app. To try it out, go to Preferences -> Software Update -> Enable code block.

Version 6.4

New:

  • Start discussions in the Work Chat view with a New Chat button.
  • Improved search behavior:
    • When you clear a search you will be returned to your previous note or view.

Fixed:

  • When you restart Evernote, there was an issue that it sometimes didn’t remember the last note you were on. Now it does.
  • Improved overall stability.

Version 6.3

New:

  • Some people were unwittingly deleting notes by hitting ⌫. Totally our fault for not putting a safety on the deleter. So we changed the key command to ⌘⌫, which is much harder to do on accident (and is equivalent to Finder’s shortcut key).
  • We also added a preference to disable auto-formatting of bulleted lists and emojis, for those who want a little more control.

Fixed:

  • Fixed an issue where font information was lost when copying from Evernote.
  • Fixed an issue where URLs for web-clipped notes wouldn’t appear.
