Signs for Hope [Top]

Our goal is to provide photos that show signs of hope for reduced casualties and the promised humanitarian aid to be delivered to the region. Through doing this, we hope to help hasten an end to military conflict in the area. Disclaimer: (1) We recognize that these pictures are not representative of the overall impact of war. (2) Those who want to demonize soldiers and the military will probably not like these photos. (3) We also recognize that there are numerous viewpoints regarding the situation in Iraq. For example, those who are supportive of Saddam Hussein and the military serving him, will not be encouraged to see photos of his soldiers choosing peace.

An increase in this kind of military action could help rapidly reduce conflict and human losses in the region. (source: MSNBC website)

Dropping Leaflets, Not Bombs (20030321fr1000) [Top]

The U.S. Air Force was dropping leaflets, letting Iraqi soldiers know how they can keep safe. Radio, TV, loudspeakers are also being used. E-mail messages are being sent to top Iraqi leaders, and phone calls were being made to their cell phones to encourage them to accept peace. This man (below, left) received a leaflet and was encouraged to accept peace.

Many of these marines have their guns behind their backs (below) as they show kindness to Iraqi soldiers who are not interested in fighting a war.

What if there was a war, and nobody came?

These Iraqi soldiers are showing little interest in engaging in an aggressive conflict. Such a Gandhi-like response is courageous and results in significantly reduced conflict and loss of life.

Destroying Weapons (20030322sa) [Top]

"They will beat their swords into plowshares
and their spears into pruning hooks.
Nation will not take up sword against nation,
nor will they train for war anymore. " - Isaiah 2:4

This soldier is using a sledge hammer to destroy weapons. Although these guns are not weapons of mass destruction, this is a hopeful sign for a reduction of arms in the region. (source: MSNBC website)

Points for Concern [Top]

Support for humanitarian aid to Iraq is unanimous in the U.S. and around the world. However, the world reaction to the use of bombs and missiles in conjunction with an Aid to Iraq program has been negative. This has created outbreaks of violence, demonstrations, and tension around the world.

Suffering Children (20030322sa) [Top]

Numerous images, like this one, have sparked world-wide grief and concern about some actions of the U.S. Military which are non-humanitarian (such as the bombing raids on the city of Baghdad). This has resulted in a global movement asking that the U.S. quickly deliver on its promise of humanitarian aid to Iraq. Click here for more information about what was promised.

World-Wide Protests (20030322sa1303) [Top]

Some individuals (over 11 million) gathered to express concern about certain aspects of the U.S. Aid to Iraq program such as the use of missiles and bombs. They are questioning why 300,000 troops need to engage in a military invasion of Iraq simply to deliver the food and other humanitarian aid promised by the United States (on behalf of the President). A few photos are shown below. Click here to view more.

A group of people in the streets of Iowa City were protesting some aspects of the U.S. military involvement in Iraq which they feel are excessively violent and imperialist.
